Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD, also known as autism)is a neurodevelopmental condition caused by differences in the brain. People with autism have difficulties with social communication and social interaction, which can cause issues for them at work, home or in social settings. They may also have repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, and/or sensory sensitivities.
Assessment of adult autism takes several sessions (usually 3-4). The assessment includes:
- Background history (including education, employment, family & relationship history, mental and physical health)
- ASD symptoms (in adulthood and as a child) using the DISCO assessment interview
- Developmental history (pregnancy/birth, milestones, etc)
- Screening assessment of other conditions which could cause or contribute to ASD symptoms (e.g., anxiety, mood disorders, PTSD, ADHD, learning disabilities)
Assessment information can be collected in several ways:
- Questionnaires
- Clinical interview
- Corroborative interview(s) with partner, parent, sibling or close friend (if available)
- Review of school reports/ medical reports (if available)
Assessments are conducted jointly by Dr Ceara Osleger and Dr Rachel Edwards, clinical psychologists. You will meet both of us at least once during the assessment process. This is in line with NHS recommendations, to ensure that a thorough assessment is completed. We would need to meet you in person at least once during the assessment at our clinic room in Bedford town centre, but other parts of the assessment can be completed online via zoom if you prefer. Conversations with someone who knows you well (such as a parent or partner) can be via an in-person interview, on zoom, by telephone or email.
Once your assessment is complete, we will meet to discuss the findings and to talk through your diagnostic report and recommendations. A draft copy of the report is then sent to you to read through, before the final copy goes out to you and your GP.
The total cost for an adult ASD assessment and diagnostic report is £1800. This can be paid in two instalments, one of £900 payable at your first appointment, and a second payment of £900 payable at your feedback session. Should you have private medical insurance, contact your insurer directly to enquire whether they fund ASD assessments.
